379 candidates in fray in first phase

RAIPUR: Campaigning for the first phase of Chhattisgarh assembly elections ended at 5 pm on Wednesday. Altogether 379 candidates are testing their electoral fortunes from 39 constituencies where polling is scheduled for November 14.
The state has a total of 90 seats and polling for the remaining 51 seats is to be held on November 20.
Polling in the first phase will be held in five districts of Bastar region - Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Durg, Mahasamund and Dhamtari.
The main contestants whose political fate will be decided on November 14 includes the chief minister Raman Singh, Speaker Prem Prakash Pandey, leader of opposition Mahendra Karma, BJP national secretary Saroj Pandey, AICC treasurer Motilal Vora's son Arun Vora and former Union minister Arvind Netam's daughter Preeti Netam.
Of the 39 seats going to polls in the first phase, the ruling BJP had won 30 in the 2003 assembly election.
A total of 63,98,710 voters will exercise their franchise in 8879 polling stations during the first phase. Polling will begin at 7 am and end at 3 pm for 12 seats in Bastar region, where security personnel have their task cut out to escort voters and polling parties as well. The polling timing for the rest of the seats will be 8 am to 5 pm.
"Some forty thousand security personnel, including Central forces, have been deployed to ensure fair and peaceful polling," said election office sources.
